The engaging discussion explored shared ownership as a sustainable and increasingly essential alternative to private renting, supported by 93% of local authorities. Despite its growing relevance, the model faces persistent challenges: inconsistent practices across housing associations, a lack of public awareness, limited mortgage lender options and declining unit availability.
A recurring theme was the urgent need for a unified code of conduct and a customer facing information guide, which could help address fragmentation, standardise staircasing and resale processes, and empower buyers with greater transparency.
The speakers also emphasised the importance of government collaboration with existing stakeholders, rather than launching new schemes, to ensure that shared ownership remains an accessible, long-term solution for buyers across life stages.
